Holiday 2008 (Robe SA)

Album: Holiday 2008 (Robe SA)Holiday to Robe South Australia

This is our second visit to the Robe Long beach Caravan Park, this time we spent 18 days there and unfortunately the weather was a little disappointing. Of the 18 days there was only a couple of days that the wind wasn’t blowing a gale and only a few where the temperatures peaked above the mid 20 Deg’s.

10 January 2008

For the second year running we left on a day forecast for 40 Deg plus and although the Land Rover has fantastic air-conditioning (it takes a Brit to really make something that’s this cold) I learnt last year that its best to take it easy in these conditions, saving approx 90 litres of fuel compared to the previous year where I used the right foot all the way.

Up early at 3am, we hit the road at around 4ish, with the girls sleeping for the first couple of hundred KMs we made out way towards Robe and stopped at Hamilton for breakfast.

We had camp set up about 2pm with the girls off to the pool for a swim, helped by the fact we gained half an hour when we crossed the border.

11 January 2008

Our first real day in Robe and with the girls waking up early and indulging with jam on toast whilst watching a movie.

After a quick play at the playground we made our way into town and the visitor information centre which is at the public library to see what was happening in the local area for the next few weeks.

From here we made our way to Long beach for a quick play and then back to the caravan.

12 January 2008

Today we made our way to a beach that I had discovered exploring on the final day last year which is a sheltered bay between Bishop's Pate and Long Gully beach and marked as “13” on the 4wd maps.

It’s a relatively secluded beach with 2 fantastic rocks formations either side and the 4wd track heading in the opposite direction. Due to this seclusion most of the photos taken here are not suitable for the website.

Back at the caravan Meg spent a great deal of time removing the dead bugs off Tonka Sal' using a dustpan and brush.

13 January 2008

Making our way to the annual Cape Jaffa Seafood and Wine Festival we went via Kingston, to be honest there really isn’t much to say about Kingston it’s a large town with very little of interest, there’s the Big Lobster in a state of disrepair and the old Cape Jaffa lighthouse which was relocated in 1975 which they charge $5 entry fee to visit.

Cape Jaffa is a small town which presently has a multi million dollar mariner being built with land sales topping 30 million it will be interesting to see how this changes the demographics of the area.

We had a good afternoon at the Cape Jaffa Seafood and Wine Festival, trying a few different selections from the local wineries with a tray of fresh prawns whilst live bands played. The girls had there faces painted and ate chips and played.

15 January 2008

Off to "our beach" again today with the plan to come in from below our usual entry point as we haven’t explored this area, unfortunately due to the lack of rain and wind this made conditions on the sand arduous so we made our way back inland stopping at a few lakes along the way and entered via our normal route.

Catherine and the girls built a giant sand bird which later turned into a garage for the toy cars to park and I once again I dug a pool for the kids to play in.

After a little persuasion I managed to convince Caitlin that it might be fun to try jumping from the sand dunes onto the beach, with each additional jump she became more and more adventurous.

16 January 2008

Another windy day today we made our way into Millicent to do some food shopping in preparation for Jamie and Sarah coming up tomorrow, as it turned out we didn’t actually end up doing any shopping.

Instead we drove down the tourist drive which goes via the largest Wind farm in Australia, each windmill produces enough power for 1100 homes and saves tones in green house gases.

From here we went to the Tantanoola Cave which although is only a single cave unlike the Naracorte Caves in my opinion this is a far more spectacular cave.

On the way back we went via Southport which is directly opposite Beachport on the other side of the bay the scenery is comparable to the Victorian Great Ocean Road.
