Server Upgrades

Yes, I have actually been busy since we arrived home from our holiday in Robe, primarily doing work on the home network which I have avoided for quite some time, but as always it’s amongst other things such as a new kitten, Caitlins Birthday, helping my Brother in-law out, Connor starting back at school and Caitlin starting at school for the first time.

As you have probably noticed by the lack of updates on the website I’m a bit bored with “Technology" at the moment and even taking any photos.

I’ve had a new server at home to replace the existing file and print server for the last 4 plus months but I just haven’t been able to find the energy or will power needed to deploy it. The old server has a nasty habit of locking up which is a right pain because the MediaPortal PC which is connected to the TV gets rather grumpy whenever you try to access files on this server.

This combined with the fact that the Domino web server was almost out of disk space which made updating the website take 10 times longer than it should and that my desktop desperately needed the removal of Vista and a reinstall of good ‘ol XP. (In my opinion Vista is without a doubt the worst Operating System ever created by Microsoft, far worse than even Windows ME and I blame this as a major contributor to my lack of interest in my PC’s of late.)

So anyway it all started because I went to turn the cartoons on for the kids the other morning only to find that the MediaPortal PC wouldn’t boot. As far as I can gather the PC had filled up with dust, overheated and then spent the night rebooting causing XP to corrupt itself. So after messing around trying to fix it I gave up and reinstalled XP and everything is up and running again.
This is one of those projects that i have had on the cards for so long i cant remember when i started it....

The Idea
Some years ago i read on the Internet some one who had turned a laptop into a Digital Picture Frame (DPF) of course now you can buy small versions at your Kmart, BigW etc.

The Laptop
I had an old laptop which i scored as a spoil of war in 2002 when the company i was working for went belly up. Since then it has slowly disintegrated, the screen hinge broke, the chassis eventually has cracked form the weight of the screen, i spilt coffee on the keyboard so this gave up the ghost along with the usb port and the CD Rom died years ago.

So simply it was stuffed and has been sitting around in my parts box unused for a year or more now

This laptops main feature is the 15" screen with a resolution of 1400x1050 ideal for a DPF and it has a P3 500mhz cpu with 256Mb of Ram which is enough grunt to run Windows making life simpler.
Well I found myself home today due to an incident with a Stanley knife not playing nicely with me and a few fresh few stitches in my hand.

Doing my best to ignore work I decided that there was no point putting off the fact that the website is long overdue for a tidy up.

Currently the website has approx 12,000 photos in 200 albums and the 1st level photo album navigation has become clumsy to say the least. So where ever possible I have moved as much as I can into sub albums and deleted anything that was on my AULRO Huts website.

Having a tidy up I realised that I really should make more of an effort to include descriptive text, with many of the photo albums having nothing more than a date!

12 hours later and finally with all the broken links fixed due to photo albums being moved and I realised that some of the albums have been corrupted! It was at about this time I really, really wished I hadn't started this….
